Adney Lake was last surveyed by the DNR in June 2024. The placed nets marked by red floating flags then retrieved the nets and counted the fish by type. We hope to have a preliminary report by the Annual Meeting/Picnic. (MN DNR Fisheries (218) 671-7930; Conservation Officer - Tony Flerlage, 888-646-6367.)

MPCA testing of water clarity in 2015 showed >4 meters (>12 feet) secchi depth and colored dissolved organic matter in 2016 of 0.1. (The 2010 survey reported a clarity of 17 feet.) The MPCA typically focuses on lakes greater than 500 acres and tests only a portion of smaller lakes with public accesses. They indicate tracking water clarity is like monitoring your blood pressure. It reflects the overall health of the lake. For this reason, they offer a Citizen Lake Monitoring Program for lake enthusiasts who would like to test the water and report results. Mark Fritsvold has been measuring the lake clarity of Adney Lake since June 2023 and measured a clarity of over 20 feet.

Residents have noticed a reduction in the algae bloom present in the lake. This is likely due to fewer owners using fertilizer containing phosphorus and the drought limiting run-off into the lake.

The MPCA has a simple, no-cost test for blue-green algae if anyone is interested in finding out more about this issue. www.pca.state.mn.us says a simple Jar Test can help determine if the green color is from blue-green algae, or just an overabundance of more beneficial types of planktonic algae. There is also a stick test to identify a mat of green floating material. If you push a sturdy stick through the green mat and slowly pull it out to find it looking like it had been dipped into paint, it is likely blue-green algae. If the stick comes out with green strands like hair or threads, it is probably filamentous green algae which may be a nuisance but is not a health hazard.

Mnlakesandrivers.org has printed a June 2023 draft statement entitled Minnesota's Vanishing Natural Shoreline: A Loss that Contributes to Degraded Lake Quality. The report shows that many of Minnesota's lakes are in trouble. About half of Minnesota's natural shorelines have already been lost and natural shoreline continues to vanish at an alarming rate. Mowed or cleared shorelines allow 7 to 9 times more pollutants to enter the lake creating serious water quality issues, promoting algae blooms and excessive aquatic vegetation.

Adney Lake is in good shape although there has been some unfortunate shore clearing completely to the water line, a good share remains natural habitat providing protection of clean water, healthy fish population and habitat for other treasured residents such as frogs, butterflies and loons. Our goal as an Association will be to continue to protect the shoreline. We ask lake residents to help with this effort by being mindful of using proper shoreline maintenance techniques.

Reference the Crow Wing County waterway regulations for the most current requirements enforced by the Recreation Division.

Shoreland and Docks Regulations:
If you own waterfront property, you must follow the Water Surface Use Ordinance and state shoreland guidelines. Lakes and Rivers permits are required for major dirt removal or vegetation alteration within the shoreline zone.

SPECIAL NOTE:
The concrete pad at the Adney Lake public boat launch ramp buckled for a second winter in a row. We thank the DNR for repairing the ramp so quickly after ice-out. They used a different method of repair this time so we're hopeful it will withstand next winter's freeze.

The purpose of Adney Lake Association is to preserve and enhance the quality of life on and around Adney Lake. Owners along the shores of Adney Lake share a desire to maintain the clarity and pristine nature of this spring-fed lake and surrounding land. Residents exhibit respectful treatment of each other, honor differences and are inclusive in all Association activities. We strive to maintain this lake as a place where families and friends can gather to enjoy each other's company while preserving the beauty of nature. Many enjoy pontoon rides around the lake, fishing, campfires, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Although skiing, tubing and riding jet-skis are activities several enjoy on holidays and weekends, the majority of the time you will find this to be a serene and tranquil lake where the resident pair of loons provide our favorite sounds. We ask all lake visitors to stay at least 200 feet away from the nesting platform and take special care around the loons, especially the babies which are not able to dive out of the way of watercraft.

Lake Rules
Residents and members of the Adney Lake Association welcome you to our beautiful lake. We are immensely proud of Adney Lake and its designation as one of the most pristine lakes in Minnesota. As you enjoy this special place, we ask you to respect all neighbors, property, wildlife and obey all Department of Natural Resources (DNR) rules. Below are important lake etiquette and DNR rules to prevent problems or potential fines.

  • Please do not harass loons, ducks, or other wildlife. Understand that the young may not be able to dive out of the way of watercraft or otherwise protect themselves.
  • Stay at least 200 feet away from the clearly marked loon nesting platform located on the northeast side of the lake. No boating, fishing or otherwise entering the area behind the loon platform during the nesting period which is typically early May through the end of June.
  • Refrain from bathing with soaps or shampoos in the lake as these products break the surface tension of the water, reducing the oxygen level and causing harm to fish and other aquatic life.
  • Before you launch a boat, kayak, or other watercraft, make sure it is free of aquatic invasive species.  If your boat has been in a lake with Aquatic Invasive Species follow Crow Wing County’s “Clean, Drain, Dry” guidelines. Dry your boat and equipment for at least 5 days before launching in another lake OR rinse with hot water 120 degrees for 2 minutes, 140 degrees for 10 seconds, or high-pressure wash. (A free decontamination station is located at Crosslake Joint Highway Maintenance Facility, 13870 Whipple Drive.)
  • Please follow safe boating practices and keep your speed low near shore. MN DNR rules require travel at slow wake speed (5mph) within 150 feet of shore, docks, swimmers, rafts, anchored or non-motorized vessels. This rule also applies to Jet skis.
  • Human-powered watercraft (kayaks, canoes, etc.) always have the right-of-way.
  • Jet skis are asked to stay toward the middle of the lake as much as possible and may only be operated between 9:00am and an hour before sunset. Be aware people may be in the water near boats, pontoons and docks.
  • Ensure all garbage is contained so it will not end up in the lake or be available for wildlife access. (This includes leaving garbage cans out other than the day of commercial pickup.) Remember bears and other “dumpster diving” wildlife are active in our area.
  • Water is a great carrier of sound. Many folks on the lake came to seek peace and tranquility. Kindly keep volumes to a respectful level and honor quiet time. Crow Wing County ordinance defines quiet times as follows:    Sunday through Thursday – 10pm to 7am; Friday and Saturday – Midnight to 7am
